untied is the UK's personal tax app. We have been working with delivery riders and couriers since April 2020 to help make taxes quick and easy. untied is the best way to keep track of what you owe when you owe it, and most importantly, how much you can save. Our team is also on hand to answer questions with our five-star service.

Do I need to file a tax return?

If you are a delivery rider, delivery driver, or courier for Deliveroo, UberEats, Stuart, AmazonFlex (or another company), earning over £1,000 in a year, you need to register with the tax authority (HMRC) and file a tax return each year. This can also be called 'Self Assessment'. untied can help you do it. 😁

You'll be among 12 million people who have to do this. They include all self-employed people, people who earn income from property, and also higher earners.

People who are employed will generally get a payslip and have tax deducted by their employer. As a self-employed person, you have to report what you earn and pay any tax directly to HMRC. The easiest way to do this is of course with untied.

What is a tax return?

A tax return is a submission to the tax authorities of how much money you made this year. You must show your earnings, as well as any allowable expenses that occurred during the year and you must complete a return every year.

If you earned more than £1,000 as self-employed between 6 April 2021 and 5 April 2022, you need to register with HMRC (by 5 October 2023) and complete a tax return and pay your tax due (you can do this at any point between 6 April 2022 and 31 January 2023; HMRC tell you what to pay after you submit).

For example, if you worked for Deliveroo or another food delivery company like Uber Eats or Just Eat, or you worked for another self-employed platform like Uber.

  • You may also need to complete a return if you made any significant extra income over the year (such as from renting property, shares, cryptocurrencies, dividends, or from selling goods on eBay or Etsy)

Don't worry if you missed the deadline to register, as untied can still help. Contact us here.

What are the tax deadlines?

You need to file your tax return by 31 January, otherwise, you may have to pay a £100 penalty.  If you miss the deadline, try and file as soon as possible and get in contact with us, so that we can help you minimise any late penalties.

How do I file my taxes?

Most people file their taxes towards the end of the year and can do so in three different ways:

  • The quickest and simplest way to submit your tax return is to use untied. You can do this directly from your mobile or desktop browser
  • Use an accountancy firm - untied works with a number of accountants and we can refer you to one
  • Complete all the forms and submit your tax return yourself on the HMRC website

What do I need to file my tax return?

You will need your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference). This will have been sent to you when you registered with HMRC.

If you can't find your number, either:

  • Check on documents that HMRC have sent to you, as they often include it
  • Take a look for it on previous tax returns you have filed
  • If you have an HMRC log in, you can find this number in your personal tax account.

Once you have your UTR, you can check it here

If you didn’t register or can’t find your number, let us know at contact@untied.io and we will help you.

How does the untied app work?

untied is easy to use and you don't need an accountant, which means untied helps you save money, time, and effort. untied is quicker than submitting a return on the HMRC website and at a lower cost than an accountancy firm.

There are two ways to use untied - untied lite for manual entry and untied Pro which is a full-powered tax app and the top choice of many riders, as it logs your journeys automatically to claim those mileage expenses! When it comes to filing your tax return, you can do that directly from untied.

Delivery riders and couriers are always giving feedback to untied that it's the fastest and best value way of getting your taxes done. Give untied a try today!

Of course, some users still will want an accountant, especially for the tricky questions, in which case they may want to use untied's accountant portal.

Does untied offer discounts for delivery riders?

Yes! Delivery riders currently receive a discount to file their tax return with untied – check out the current offers.
