According to HMRC more than 10,000 tax returns were filed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day last year. For some, filing tax returns at Christmas appears to be a tradition. The peak time was between 1pm and 2pm. And 2,626 were sent in on Xmas Day itself.
So presumably people celebrated (or drowned their sorrows) with a slap up lunch and plenty of alcohol.
It doesn’t need to be this way. Tom certainly won’t be doing his tax return at Christmas:

Filing your tax return with untied
We are counting down to deadline day so we all know how much time there is to get your tax return ready to submit if you haven’t already.
There’s no need to do it while eating turkey but you can if you want. Once you’ve got everything tagged you could submit to HMRC from the app between courses. Then pull a cracker!
untied makes it easy to stay on top of things if you’re the sort of person who likes to stay organised. But if you’re like me you’ll probably find the search and ‘similar matching‘ options handy. These make short shrift of going through a backlog of transactions and getting things tagged quickly. And you can create rules to make it automatic next time. There’s also the web app which is ideal for bulk processing or if you prefer to use a big screen.
Once you’re ready, here’s a guide we’ve put together to submitting your return from the app. Just make sure you have your government gateway ID somewhere.
